Jodie Turner-Smith is optimistic about this "exciting" chapter of her life after filing to divorce Joshua Jackson.
"Sometimes things we really want to work just don’t end up working. And that’s OK," the "Queen & Slim" star, 37, told The Sunday Times in an interview published on Sunday. "The most important thing is that you choose what’s healthiest for you and your family and definitely your children."
The British model filed for divorce from the "Dawson's Creek" alum, 45, in Los Angeles Superior Court in October, court documents obtained by USA TODAY show. Turner-Smith listed the couple's date of separation as Sept. 13, 2023, citing "irreconcilable differences" as her reason for filing.
Turner-Smith ultimately decided to "make a move because I believe that there are visible scars from staying in places that are not good for us. And they don’t just affect us, they affect everybody around us."
"I don’t think it’s a failure," she said of the divorce. "We obviously had such a beautiful moment together. And now it’s time for a new moment for both of us. And how exciting! The bravest thing in the world is to recognize when something’s not working and to make a move, and I always want to set that kind of example for my daughter."
The former couple share 3-year-old daughter Juno Jackson. In November, they reached a joint physical and legal custody decision with neither party paying child support.
Turner-Smith also made it clear that she's not in a rush to reenter the dating pool. "I am a single mother and it is incredible," she said. "Right now is a sensitive time, the time for me to be focused on her. I’m enjoying not having to focus on a man. Men take up a lot of space!"
In the interview, "The Independent" actress talked fondly about the strength their daughter Juno has given her.
"Everything really is for her," Turner-Smith said, adding, "Motherhood makes me more powerful. Now I know I am capable of so much because I became a mother. Thank God I became a mother! Not only has it been revealed to me exactly how powerful I am, but it has also been revealed to me that I deserve the world."
Jackson and Turner-Smith got married in August 2019.

The couple met at Usher's 40th birthday party in 2018. The "Fatal Attraction" star told "Watch What Happens Live" host Andy Cohen during an appearance in April that he knew he wanted to marry Turner "when she walked into the room" the night they met.
Jackson also shared in an interview with The Sunday Times in April that he "didn't think I ever wanted to get married" prior to meeting Turner-Smith.
"Partially, it's age," he said of his changed mindset. "I'm old enough to be able to do this. Partially it's about finding somebody in the right moment of life."
He added: "If we had met five years earlier we probably would have had a torrid affair, but all the rest of this stuff, I was just not ready."
